The Indian Army has recently inducted a new batch of MTO UB1 repair vehicles, built on the Ural-4320 chassis, marking a significant enhancement to its battlefield logistics and maintenance capabilities. Showcased in recent displays, these vehicles feature unique adaptations tailored to Indian requirements, including a right-hand drive configuration and an exhaust system positioned on the left side—distinctly opposite to the standard left-hand drive setup used by the Russian Army.

The Ural-4320, a general-purpose 6×6 off-road vehicle originally produced by the Ural Automotive Plant in Miass, Russia, has been customized for the Indian Army with an armored KUNG shelter, enabling it to transport troops, weapons, and critical supplies while providing repair and maintenance support in diverse operational environments. This induction underscores India’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing, with vehicles likely produced under license by Indian firms such as BEML, aligning with the “Make in India” initiative.

The MTO UB1 (Mobile Technical Workshop) is designed to provide on-field repair and maintenance support for the Indian Army’s mechanized and artillery units, ensuring operational readiness in challenging conditions. Built on the rugged Ural-4320 chassis, known for its reliability in harsh terrains, the vehicle is equipped with a KUNG (Karoseri Universal Nomer Goda) shelter—a modular, insulated, and armored compartment that houses specialized repair equipment, tools, and spare parts. The Ural-4320, originally designed for the Russian Army, is a workhorse known for its durability and versatility. Powered by a KamAZ-740 V8 diesel engine (10,857 cc, 210 hp, 640 Nm torque), it offers a carrying capacity of approximately 7.9 tons and can tow trailers or artillery pieces, as seen in its use as a launch platform for the BM-21 Grad rocket system. In the Indian context, the Ural-4320 chassis has been adapted for the MTO UB1 role, with enhancements such as:
