The Indian Army has initiated a search for state-of-the-art unmanned “surveillance copters” capable of operating effectively in extreme and varied terrains, from expansive plains and arid deserts to the high-altitude reaches of mountainous regions exceeding 4,500 meters. These advanced drones, essential to the Army’s modernization efforts, are intended to bolster surveillance and intelligence capabilities along India’s challenging frontiers, especially in regions where conventional surveillance tools face operational limitations.
The Indian Army’s specifications for these drones reflect the unique operational demands of high-altitude regions, emphasizing resilience, versatility, and cutting-edge technology.
Altitude and Terrain Capability: The surveillance copters must be able to take off from elevations above 4,500 meters, and once airborne, operate at altitudes up to 5,000 meters. This high-altitude capability is essential for patrolling the rugged, elevated terrains typical of India’s northern borders.
All-Weather, Day-and-Night Operations: The drones are required to operate continuously, day and night, and in varying weather conditions. This feature is crucial for maintaining uninterrupted surveillance capabilities, especially in areas where adverse weather and low visibility are frequent challenges.
Modular Design for Future Upgrades: To accommodate advancements in drone technology, the Army has emphasized a modular design for the surveillance copters. This approach will allow for future upgrades and customizations, ensuring that the drones remain relevant and effective as technology evolves.
High-Resolution Imaging and Real-Time Transmission: Equipped with high-resolution cameras, the surveillance copters should be able to capture clear, detailed images and videos and transmit these in real time to commanders on the ground. This functionality ensures that decision-makers have immediate access to intelligence, enabling quick and informed responses.
Operational Range and Duration: Each drone is expected to have an operational range of at least 5 kilometers, with a minimum flight endurance of 60 minutes. This balance of range and endurance is essential for covering extensive and remote areas without frequent landings for recharging or refueling.
Satellite-Based Navigation System: To maintain precise and reliable navigation, especially in areas with limited ground-based navigation aids, the surveillance copters must be compatible with a global satellite-based navigation system. This capability will ensure accurate positioning and reduce the risk of losing control in complex terrain.
