At the Annual Press conference held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on Monday, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Indian Army, made a significant announcement regarding the Army’s artillery modernization efforts.

General Dwivedi revealed that the Indian Army is poised to significantly enhance its firepower with the procurement of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS). He stated, “If everything goes as planned, we hope to sign a contract for approximately 307 ATAGS, worth around ?8,000 crore, before the end of this financial year.”

The ATAGS, a product of indigenous design and development, represents a leap forward in India’s quest for self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Developed by DRDO in collaboration with private sector partners, this 155mm/52 caliber gun system is designed to operate in high-altitude areas, providing the Army with long-range, precision strike capabilities.

The procurement of 307 ATAGS not only signifies a massive investment in modern artillery but also underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to upgrading its weapon systems amidst evolving security challenges, particularly along its borders. The financial commitment of around ?8,000 crore highlights the strategic importance of artillery in contemporary warfare scenarios, where firepower and precision are critical.
