In a significant step towards enhancing its aerial combat capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated the procurement of a limited number of Astra MK2 missiles, marking the beginning of the production process for this advanced Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM).
The Astra MK2 is an evolution of the Astra MK1, which has already been integrated into several IAF fighter aircraft, including the Su-30MKI and the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. The MK2 variant boasts several enhancements.
With a purported range of 160 kilometres, it surpasses its predecessor, providing the IAF with an extended engagement capability against aerial threats. This feature allows for better control over the missile’s trajectory, increasing the no-escape zone for enemy aircraft.
The Astra MK2 is equipped with an indigenous, highly advanced seeker, enhancing its effectiveness in complex electronic warfare environments. While specific numbers of the missiles to be procured remain undisclosed, the process signifies the IAF’s commitment to integrating state-of-the-art technology into its arsenal.
