In a significant boost to the Indian Navy’s underwater capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is poised to finalize a deal for the procurement of three additional Kalvari-class submarines by the end of this year. These submarines will be locally manufactured by the state-owned Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in collaboration with the French Naval Group.

The decision comes on the heels of successful negotiations and price submissions for the project. This acquisition marks a continuation of the successful Kalvari-class program, which has already seen six submarines join the Indian Navy.

The upcoming submarines are set to be even more formidable than their predecessors. A crucial addition is the DRDO-developed fuel-cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) module. This technology will extend the submarine’s length by 10 meters and significantly enhance its underwater endurance through the integration of Lithium-ion batteries.

Addressing the evolving operational requirements of the Navy, the design incorporates modifications to navigation and communication systems based on lessons learned from the previous six Kalvari-class submarines.

MDL has informed the MoD and the Indian Navy that the construction of the first submarine is expected to be completed within six years, with its induction into the Navy following a year later. This timeline is contingent on the contract finalization, which is anticipated by the end of 2023.

The acquisition of these additional submarines is a strategic move to strengthen India’s maritime security posture and underscores the nation’s growing indigenous defense capabilities.
