In response to recent attempts by Pakistan to target the Delhi-NCR region with Short-Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBMs), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has been directed to accelerate the development of the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) Phase-II system. This directive comes as India has already begun deploying its BMD Phase-I interceptors, signaling a robust response to escalating regional threats.

According to sources close to idrw.org, Pakistan employed HATF-I and Fatah-II SRBMs in recent conflicts, both of which were successfully neutralized by India’s Akash and Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MR-SAM) systems. The effectiveness of these systems in countering Pakistan’s missile attacks underscores India’s growing air defense capabilities. However, concerns are mounting over Pakistan’s potential use of more advanced Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) like the Shaheen series in future conflicts.

The BMD Phase-I system, designed to intercept and destroy missiles with ranges up to 2,000 km, is capable of countering the Shaheen series. However, Indian defense planners anticipate that Pakistan may escalate its missile strategy by deploying longer-range Medium-Range Ballistic Missiles (MRBMs) to overwhelm India’s current defenses. This potential threat has prompted the urgent push for BMD Phase-II, which is designed to tackle more sophisticated and longer-range missile threats.

idrw.org has confirmed that India had activated its BMD Phase-I interceptors during the recent conflict, though they were not engaged as the Akash and MR-SAM systems proved sufficient to neutralize the incoming SRBMs. The successful interceptions highlight the layered strength of India’s air defense network, with Akash and MR-SAM forming the first line of defense, backed by the more advanced BMD Phase-I for higher-altitude and longer-range threats.

The BMD Phase-II program is expected to enhance India’s missile defense architecture significantly. While Phase-I focuses on intercepting missiles in the endo-atmospheric and low exo-atmospheric layers, Phase-II aims to provide a more comprehensive shield, capable of neutralizing MRBMs and other advanced threats in higher exo-atmospheric regions. This development is critical to ensuring the security of key metropolitan areas like Delhi-NCR, which remain prime targets for hostile missile strikes.

The DRDO’s accelerated efforts on BMD Phase-II reflect India’s commitment to maintaining a technological edge in the region. As Pakistan continues to bolster its missile arsenal, India’s multi-layered defense strategy, combining indigenous systems like Akash, MR-SAM, and the evolving BMD program, is poised to deter and defeat future threats. The successful deployment and performance of current systems, coupled with the rapid development of Phase-II, signal India’s readiness to counter any escalation in missile warfare.
