Recent media reports suggesting that India is actively opposing Bangladesh’s prospective acquisition of JF-17 “Thunder” fighter jets have been contradicted by statements from the Indian Air Force (IAF). According to an IAF official speaking to idrw.org, the Indian government harbors no objections to this deal, refuting earlier narratives that portrayed India as vehemently against the procurement due to the aircraft’s origin from Pakistan and China, nations considered as adversaries by New Delhi.
Bangladesh has expressed interest in upgrading its air force capabilities, which currently rely on an aging fleet of F-7 and MiG-29 fighters. The JF-17, developed jointly by Pakistan and China, offers a modern alternative with its multi-role capabilities, which include air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The interest was visibly demonstrated during a January visit by a high-ranking Bangladeshi military delegation, led by Lt. Gen. SM Qamarul Hassan, to Pakistan, where they showed keen interest in the JF-17 among other advanced defense systems.
Traditionally, India has been cautious about the military capabilities of its neighbours, especially when those capabilities are bolstered by Pakistan and China. However, the IAF’s recent clarification indicates a shift or at least a nuanced approach towards regional military developments. This could be seen as an acknowledgement of Bangladesh’s sovereign right to choose its defence partners and equipment.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to Western sanctions on Russia, affecting Bangladesh’s ability to maintain and service its MiG-29 fleet. This situation has pushed Bangladesh to look for alternative aircraft suppliers, with the JF-17 emerging as a viable option due to its cost-effectiveness and performance.
For Bangladesh, the JF-17 represents not just a military upgrade but also an economic decision. The aircraft’s lower cost compared to Western counterparts, combined with the familiarity of its systems due to their similarity with the retiring Chengdu J-7, makes it an attractive choice.
The initial reports of India’s opposition stirred significant debate on platforms like X, where users discussed the geopolitical implications and India’s strategic interests. However, the IAF’s clarification has somewhat calmed these discussions, shifting focus towards the practical aspects of Bangladesh’s defense modernization and the potential for continued regional cooperation.
