In a significant leap for India’s defense technology, IIT Kanpur has unveiled an indigenous drone designed specifically for military applications. Dubbed the “swadeshi” Kamikaze drone, this innovative system is tailored for the Indian Army, offering advanced capabilities for battlefield operations. The drone promises to transform tactical engagements by enabling rapid identification and neutralization of enemy assets.

This development aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The drone represents a major milestone in India’s capability to produce state-of-the-art unmanned systems domestically.

Laboratory tests have been successfully completed, showcasing the drone’s operational potential. Full-scale trials are expected to begin within the next six to eight months, pending approval from the Indian Army.

The successful deployment of this drone could open the door to further innovations in autonomous aerial systems, including swarming capabilities and integration with other military platforms. IIT Kanpur’s initiative could also stimulate collaboration with private defense firms, driving advancements in drone technology for various military applications.

Design and Deployment: Features a foldable fixed-wing design with a 2-meter length, making it compact and portable. It can be launched using a catapult or a canister launcher, providing flexibility in deployment.

Warhead Capacity: Can carry a payload of up to 6 kg, sufficient to neutralize enemy tanks, weapons, and personnel.

Striking Range: Operates within a 100 km radius, allowing precision strikes from a safe distance.

Stealth Technology: Designed to evade radar detection, ensuring high survivability during missions.

Autonomous Operations: Utilizes an AI-enabled visual guidance system for real-time decision-making, enhancing its effectiveness in hostile environments.
