IIT Jammu’s deep-tech startup, SAP Aerospace, has proposed the development of a new Medium-Altitude Long-Endurance (MALE) drone named “Black Bird.” This Tier II UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) has the potential to significantly enhance India’s aerial surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.

The Black Bird is classified as a MALE UAV, designed to operate at medium altitudes up to 5 kilometers (16404.20 ft) . This altitude range enables the UAV to perform a wide array of missions, from surveillance and reconnaissance to environmental monitoring and disaster management.

With a maximum speed of 110 meters per second (396 kilometers per hour), the Black Bird is equipped to cover vast distances swiftly, making it ideal for time-sensitive operations. This speed, combined with its aerodynamic design, ensures high maneuverability and operational efficiency.

The 4.5-meter wingspan strikes a balance between stability and compactness. This design choice enhances the UAV’s ability to maintain steady flight, even in challenging weather conditions, while also allowing for easier transportation and deployment. As per wingspan it should make it smaller then the IAI Searcher UAV which is often classified as a Tactical UAV that is in service with IAF and Indian Army.

One of the standout features of the Black Bird is its 10-hour endurance capability. This extended flight time is critical for missions requiring prolonged surveillance and data collection, providing sustained operational presence without the need for frequent refueling or battery changes.

Company has not provided any program schedule and it is not clear if the company plans to fund the program or is waiting approval from the MoD.
