In a significant step towards bolstering indigenous capabilities in drone technology, Indian startup IG Drones has announced the sale of its Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) and First-Person View (FPV) drones to the Indian Army. This development aligns with India’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative and comes amid rising concerns over the use of foreign components in critical defense systems.

The deal is particularly noteworthy in light of an incident last year, where an Indian Army drone, suspected to contain Chinese-manufactured components, was reportedly hijacked near the Line of Control (LoC). The incident raised alarms about the vulnerabilities posed by foreign-origin systems, including risks of cyber espionage and compromised operational security.

IG Drones’ announcement marks a decisive shift toward 100% Indian-made drone systems, addressing these concerns by ensuring full control over both hardware and software components.

The VTOL and FPV drones developed by IG Drones offer advanced features designed to meet the challenging requirements of modern military operations:

  • VTOL Drones: These drones can take off and land vertically, eliminating the need for runways. Their versatile design makes them ideal for operations in rugged and remote terrains, including mountainous regions along the LoC.
  • FPV Drones: Equipped with real-time video transmission capabilities, FPV drones provide enhanced situational awareness, allowing soldiers to assess threats and terrain more effectively during reconnaissance or combat scenarios.
  • 100% Indigenous Build: Both drone platforms are entirely designed, developed, and manufactured in India, using secure and indigenous supply chains to ensure robustness against hijacking or external interference.
