The Indian Air Force (IAF) is embarking on a significant modernization program to transform its fleet of Su-30MKI fighter jets into veritable “missile trucks.” As the development of long-range air-to-surface weapon systems accelerates, the Su-30MKI’s ability to stay airborne for extended durations and carry substantial payloads of missiles or bombs is becoming increasingly valuable.

This enhanced firepower will significantly expand the IAF’s capabilities, supplementing the limited missile-carrying capacity of other fighter jets in its inventory. The RudraM series of air-to-surface missiles, under development at a rapid pace, will play a crucial role in this transformation. The Rudram-3 and Rudram-4, in particular, are poised to become heavy hitters in the IAF’s arsenal and will be exclusively available for the Su-30MKI platform.

The Su-30MKI is already a unique aircraft, being the only jet in the world capable of carrying the 2.5-ton Mach 3 supersonic cruise missile like the BrahMos-A ALCM. With a range of 450 kilometres, the BrahMos-A is virtually impossible to intercept, making it a formidable weapon. The IAF is also exploring the development of a lighter version, the BrahMos-NG, which will retain the same range but boast a superior supersonic cruise speed of Mach 3.5.

To further enhance its long-range strike capabilities, the Su-30MKI will also be equipped with the Nirbhay ALCM, a sub-sonic cruise missile with a range of 1000 kilometres. This will be the longest-range ALCM planned for the Su-30MKI fleet. Additionally, a new stealthy sub-sonic ALCM with a range of 500 kilometres is also in development.

As the IAF continues to modernize its fleet and invest in advanced weapon systems, the Su-30MKI’s role as a strategic asset is set to grow even more prominent. The transformation of these jets into missile trucks will provide the IAF with a powerful and versatile capability, ensuring its ability to project force and deter potential adversaries.
