The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to approach the United States Air Force (USAF) with a request to purchase five C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft to bolster its long-range strategic airlift capabilities. With a current fleet of 11 C-17s, the IAF is the second-largest operator of this aircraft type globally, following the USAF, which operates a massive fleet of 222 C-17s.
The C-17 Globemaster III has been a vital asset for the IAF since its induction, enabling the transport of troops, equipment, and humanitarian supplies across vast distances. The aircraft’s capabilities have been indispensable for military operations and disaster relief missions.
Previously, the IAF received clearance to procure three additional units after Boeing’s production line for the C-17 closed. However, due to high global demand for the aircraft, the IAF managed to acquire only one, as the remaining units were quickly snapped up by other countries.
The IAF’s long-haul cargo capacity faces challenges due to the ageing Il-76 aircraft, which are expected to be retired by 2035. The Il-76s, which have served the IAF for decades, are becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and operate, making additional C-17s a critical necessity.
The IAF intends to seek governmental approval before formally requesting the USAF to sell five C-17s from its inventory. However, securing these aircraft might be challenging, as the USAF itself faces a shortage despite operating over 200 units. The C-17 remains one of the most sought-after transport aircraft globally, with multiple operators expressing interest in acquiring additional units from the USAF.
The C-17 can carry up to 77 tons of cargo, including tanks, helicopters, and troops, making it indispensable for rapid deployment during military and humanitarian missions. Its ability to cover long distances without refuelling enhances the IAF’s global reach and logistics support. The C-17’s high availability rate and rugged design make it an ideal replacement for ageing platforms like the Il-76.
The C-17’s reputation for reliability and performance has made it highly desirable among operators worldwide. Despite its large fleet, the USAF itself faces challenges in meeting its operational demands, making it uncertain whether it can spare additional units for foreign military sales.
