Following the successful unveiling of the CATS Warrior Loyal Wingman, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has now set its sights on the development of another critical component of India’s Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) — the CATS Hunter Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM). This new project draws inspiration from the SCALP ALCM, utilized by the Ukrainian fighter jets, notably in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.
SCALP ALCM, a long-range, air-launched cruise missile, has proven effective in real combat scenarios. However, its use has been restricted to the Rafale fleet, limiting its widespread adoption within the Indian Air Force (IAF). The CATS Hunter aims to change this by offering similar capabilities but with broader compatibility across various fighter jet platforms in the IAF’s inventory.
The CATS Hunter will be powered by an indigenous HAL-developed PTAE-7 engine, which is crucial for achieving the desired range and performance metrics. With a projected range of 300 kilometres, the Hunter will operate at sub-sonic speeds, balancing the need for stealth with the requirement for an extended operational radius.
One of the key aspects of the CATS Hunter’s design is its focus on stealth. The missile will incorporate a low observable design to minimize its Radar Cross Section (RCS), making it harder for enemy radar systems to detect.
To further enhance its survivability, the CATS Hunter will employ sea-skimming flight patterns. This capability allows the missile to fly at very low altitudes over water, evading early radar detection and increasing the probability of mission success.
The prototype of the CATS Hunter ALCM is slated for unveiling in 2026, which will be followed by extensive flight trials.
