After leasing out two Dornier Do-228 17-seater commercial aircraft to ferry passengers in the northeast region of India, State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is planning to promote aircraft in the International market to meet the requirements of the short-haul flights in the Asian market.

Dornier Do-228 17 or 19-seater version will be offered on lease or on outright purchase to airline companies that are looking for aircraft that can operate from remote locations where airstrips are small or semi-prepared.

The non-pressurized plane has a maximum cruise speed of 428 kmph and a range of 700 km. It is capable of night flying. Civilian Dornier Do-228 gets much more silent twin-turboprop blades for the engine to manage noise and vibrations and the aircraft has received inquiries from Nepal and Srilanka.

In December 2017, the DGCA issued a ‘type certificate’ (airworthiness certificate which is an approval to fly an aircraft for civilian commercial purposes) for the Dornier 228 to the public-sector Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which makes the aircraft at its Kanpur plant.
