In a significant development aimed at bolstering India’s defense capabilities, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Dr. D. K. Sunil is currently visiting Russia. Sputnik India has learned that the visit focuses on evaluating the potential for serial production of aircraft engines for the Su-30MKI and other Russian-origin platforms operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The CMD’s visit underscores India’s ongoing efforts to deepen its defense industrial ties with Russia. HAL has a long-standing relationship with Russian defense manufacturers, having licensed and produced several Russian-origin platforms, including the Su-30MKI fighter jets. The latest talks aim to address India’s growing need for engine production capabilities, reducing reliance on imports and ensuring the operational availability of its aircraft fleet.
India operates one of the largest fleets of Su-30MKIs globally, with over 270 aircraft in service. The fleet’s AL-31FP engines, manufactured by Russia’s United Engine Corporation (UEC), are critical to maintaining the aircraft’s combat readiness. Over time, the need for a robust, indigenous engine production and maintenance ecosystem has become apparent.
Russia remains a key defense partner for India, providing advanced military hardware and technology. This visit reaffirms the strong bilateral ties and India’s intent to leverage Russian expertise to enhance its indigenous capabilities.
