Gridbots Technologies has introduced a cutting-edge robotic solution named VIPER, an AI-powered inspection and cleaning system designed to streamline maintenance for various types of artillery, tank, submarine, and airborne gun barrels. Equipped with an advanced laser scanning capability, VIPER automates the traditionally manual and labor-intensive process of cleaning and inspecting gun barrels, delivering efficiency and precision that enhance the reliability and lifespan of military-grade barrels.
Historically, gun barrel cleaning required multiple personnel to manually insert a steel brush along a long rod, repeatedly cleaning the barrel. This process is not only labor-intensive but often falls short of thorough cleaning, especially given the rifled structure of many barrels, which poses challenges for conventional linear cleaning methods. Misalignments and other small imperfections can be left untreated, potentially damaging the barrel over time.
VIPER addresses these challenges by automating the entire inspection and cleaning cycle, making it a quick, reliable, and effective alternative. The robot’s compact and man-portable design allows it to be deployed in difficult environments, such as practice fields, night combat zones, and high-activity areas, where traditional cleaning would be challenging or impossible.
Key Features of VIPER
The VIPER robot series is available in two models—GB-VIPER-C and GB-VIPER-I—both designed to clean barrels up to 12 meters in length. Here are some standout features that make VIPER a game-changer in barrel maintenance:
- AI-Driven Inspection: Using advanced AI and laser scanning, VIPER can thoroughly inspect barrel conditions, detecting minute defects, pitting, and wear down to 0.1 mm. Its laser-based 3D inspection provides precise measurements of these imperfections.
- 3D Profilometry and Pit Dimensioning: Laser technology allows VIPER to generate a detailed 3D profile of the barrel’s internal surface, accurately assessing the depth and dimensions of pits and irregularities. This high-resolution data can guide maintenance decisions and optimize barrel care.
- Efficient Cleaning Mechanisms: VIPER employs a multi-stage cleaning process. First, soft nylon brushes remove carbon, copper slag, fouling, and other residues from the barrel. This is followed by a cloth-based cleaning to ensure a spotless finish. An automatic lubrication cycle further protects the barrel from corrosion, while a built-in drying mechanism leaves the barrel ready for immediate use.
- User-Friendly Operation: Operated by a single person via a wireless tablet PC, VIPER is highly efficient and easy to use. Its 12V battery is rechargeable and hot-swappable, ensuring VIPER can operate continuously across multiple cleanings.
- Portable and Lightweight: Weighing less than 15 kg, VIPER is highly portable, making it easy to deploy even in remote or rugged conditions.
- Multiple Sensor Support: VIPER is outfitted with ultrasonic, MFL, gas, thermal, and 3D/GPR sensors, allowing it to perform comprehensive diagnostics on the barrel’s structural integrity.
