Goodluck Defence and Aerospace Private Limited, a subsidiary of Good Luck India Limited established on August 31, 2023, is poised to transform India’s defence manufacturing landscape with its advanced 155 mm artillery shell production facility. The company has announced that the plant, designed to produce 150,000 M107 shells annually, is well ahead of schedule and awaiting government clearances for trial commissioning. Coupled with the recent commissioning of a precision tube plant, this development is set to be a “game changer” for Good Luck India, according to Chairman M.C. Garg. The company’s exceptional performance in the last quarter of FY24 further underscores its robust growth trajectory.
Goodluck Defence and Aerospace was established to capitalize on India’s growing defence sector under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The subsidiary focuses on forging, machining, heat treatment, and coating of steel and alloys, with a primary emphasis on producing 155 mm artillery shells, critical for modern howitzer systems like the Indian Army’s M777 and Dhanush guns. These shells, with a firing range of 24–32 km, are versatile, supporting high-explosive, precision-guided, armor-piercing, and other variants, making them a cornerstone of modern warfare.
“We are delighted to report that our 155 mm shell plant is progressing well ahead of schedule,” said M.C. Garg, Chairman of Good Luck India, in a statement to shareholders. “Very soon, we may start trial commissioning of that plant, awaiting the necessary government licenses. This, along with our recently commissioned precision tube plant, will add a game-changing dimension to the company’s growth.”
Initially slated for commissioning in Q4 FY26, the artillery shell plant’s timeline has been advanced to late FY25, with trial production expected to commence by Q1 FY26 and commercial production by Q2 FY26. This accelerated progress reflects Goodluck’s operational efficiency and commitment to meeting the rising demand for defence munitions, both domestically and internationally.
In parallel, Good Luck India has commissioned a state-of-the-art hydraulic tube plant in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh, in September 2024, with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per annum (TPA). Described as “one of its kind in the world,” this facility produces precision-engineered tubes for automotive, construction, and industrial applications, serving global clients like Tesla, BMW, and Volkswagen. Garg highlighted its potential to boost EBITDA margins, projecting an increase from 8% to 25% in the defence and precision tube segments.
The 155 mm shell plant, with a proposed capital expenditure of ?250 crore, is a strategic move to tap into the global standardization of 155 mm artillery shells, driven by conflicts like the Ukraine war and regional tensions. The facility, located in Sikandrabad, will produce 150,000 M107 shells annually, with plans to scale up to 350,000 shells through a second plant in the future. These shells, priced between USD 1,000–1,200 for high-grade variants like the 155mm HE, BB AISI 9260, target premium markets, positioning Goodluck as a key supplier to the Indian Army and international defence forces.
