France has invited India to collaborate on the development of the next-generation Armement Air-Sol Modulaire (AASM) Hammer, a sophisticated air-to-surface stand-off weapon. The proposal was made during high-level discussions between the two countries, highlighting the deepening defence partnership.

The AASM Hammer, developed by Safran Electronics & Defense, is a versatile weapon system for close air support and deep strike missions. It boasts advanced features, including all-weather capability, smart guidance, and a high degree of modularity.

India’s Rafale fighter jets are already equipped with the AASM Hammer, and plans are underway to integrate it into the LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jets as well. The proposed joint development initiative aims to enhance the weapon’s capabilities further by incorporating an Augmented Range Extension Kit (REK) Active/Inactive with a Combined Mode Guidance Kit.

This upgrade will significantly extend the AASM Hammer’s range, enabling it to strike targets at distances exceeding 100 kilometres. This increased standoff capability will enhance India’s strategic capabilities and provide a valuable asset for its armed forces.

The joint development of the AASM Hammer represents a significant step forward in the defence cooperation between France and India. It demonstrates the growing trust and collaboration between the two nations and underscores their shared commitment to technological advancement and strategic partnership.
