In an exclusive update, ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency) officials have confirmed to idrw.org that the four Tejas MkII Pre-Production Prototypes will be rolled out by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) over the next 2-3 years. These aircraft will play a crucial role in the development and certification process, paving the way for production clearance by 2029.

The tentative rollout schedule, as shared by ADA officials, begins with the first Tejas MkII prototype set to be rolled out by the end of 2025. The second prototype is expected to follow in late 2026, with the third prototype slated for release by mid-2027. The fourth and final prototype will be unveiled by the end of 2027 or early 2028, marking the final step in the pre-production phase.

According to ADA officials, the second Tejas MkII prototypes onwards will be tasked with carrying out extensive weapons trials, that will start from 2026 onwards. These prototypes will also integrate a broader range of weapons compared to the first one. The trials will be an essential component of proving the aircraft’s combat capabilities and readiness for full production.

“We plan to conduct nearly 1000+ sorties before the aircraft is cleared for production,” stated the official, emphasizing the rigorous testing and validation process that the Tejas MkII will undergo in the coming years.

When queried about the engine situation, ADA officials revealed that six F-414 engines have been secured for the four Tejas MkII prototypes. Two of these engines will be kept as reserve units to support the developmental trials program, ensuring uninterrupted testing and evaluation of the aircraft’s performance.

The Tejas MkII, an advanced version of the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft, represents a significant leap forward in India’s quest for self-reliance in defense aviation. With the rollout of the pre-production prototypes, HAL and ADA are laying the groundwork for the aircraft’s eventual production and operational deployment by the Indian Air Force.
