In a move aimed at bolstering India’s aerial refueling capabilities, Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer is set to introduce its KC/C-390 Millennium aircraft in an air-to-air refueling variant at the upcoming Aero India 2025. This strategic pitch is part of Embraer’s broader initiative to deepen its defense collaboration with India, focusing on enhancing the operational efficiency of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The KC-390 Millennium, already in service with several air forces around the globe, is renowned for its versatility and performance. At Aero India, Embraer will spotlight the aircraft’s ability to act as a force multiplier through its air-to-air refueling capabilities. Equipped with underwing refueling pods, the KC-390 can service a wide array of aircraft, from fighters to transport planes, thus significantly extending the range and endurance of India’s air fleet.

“Embraer is excited to be back at Aero India as we showcase the KC-390 Millennium and our broad portfolio of defence and security solutions to the industry,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, CEO of Embraer Defense and Security. This statement underscores Embraer’s commitment to not only showcasing their advanced technology but also to fostering partnerships that could lead to co-development and manufacturing opportunities in India.

The KC-390 stands out with its capacity to carry a payload of 26 tonnes, positioning it between the C-130J Super Hercules, which can carry up to 20 tonnes, and the A-400M Atlas with its 37-tonne capacity. This payload capability, combined with its ability to perform air-to-air refueling, makes the KC-390 an attractive option for the IAF. Its operational agility, including the ability to operate from short and unprepared runways, further aligns with India’s diverse geographical and tactical requirements.

The integration of the KC-390 into the IAF’s fleet would not only upgrade its logistical support during peace times but also enhance its strategic reach in potential conflicts. Aerial refueling is pivotal for extending mission durations, allowing fighter jets to reach distant targets, conduct prolonged surveillance, or engage in extended combat operations without the need for frequent returns to base.

Aero India 2025, scheduled to be held in Bangalore, is one of Asia’s premier aerospace exhibitions. It serves as a critical platform for international defense companies like Embraer to engage with the Indian defense establishment, showcase cutting-edge technology, and explore collaborative ventures. Embraer’s presence at the event will not only highlight the KC-390 but also other aspects of its defense portfolio, including surveillance aircraft, training solutions, and cybersecurity services.
