Embraer, in its briefing to the Indian Air Force (IAF) for the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) tender for 60 transporters, has introduced a bold new proposition: the C-390M Millennium equipped with hardpoints under its wings to carry air-to-surface weapon systems. This capability, aimed at providing anti-land and anti-ship operational capabilities, could position the C-390M as a versatile, multi-role platform, beyond its primary transport functions.

The C-390M can potentially be outfitted with multiple hardpoints under each wing. These hardpoints would support heavy stand-off weapon systems, such as the Rudram-II (approximately 800 kg), an air-to-surface missile developed for the IAF.

It could also carry NASM-MR or Medium Range Anti-Ship Missiles (MRAShM), catering to anti-ship roles for the Indian Navy. Embraer is also eager to evolve the C-390M into a mothership for air-launched drones, aligning with modern air warfare trends. This variant could meet the IAF’s requirements for a swarm or autonomous UAV deployment, adding a cutting-edge capability to its fleet.

By integrating weapons systems and drone-launching capabilities, the C-390M could transform into a force multiplier, suitable for roles beyond conventional transport, such as precision strikes, maritime security, and combat UAV operations. A multi-role aircraft like the C-390M could streamline costs for the IAF by serving as both a transport aircraft and a tactical strike platform.

The IAF’s MTA tender is highly competitive, with contenders like the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and Airbus’ A400M Atlas also in the fray. By offering a weaponized and drone-capable variant, Embraer is positioning the C-390M as a unique solution capable of addressing both tactical transport and combat roles, potentially giving it an edge over its competitors.
