India showcased its growing technological prowess during the recent Republic Day parade, particularly in the realm of air defense. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed a counter-drone system that played a crucial role in securing the event, marking a significant step forward in safeguarding critical infrastructure and vulnerable areas from unmanned aerial threats.

DRDO’s solution boasts a dual approach to neutralizing micro drones. For starters, it can disrupt the crucial link between the drone and its operator by jamming command and control signals. This effectively grounds the drone, severing its ability to cause harm. However, the system goes a step further. For more immediate neutralization, it employs a laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) capable of damaging the drone’s electronics.

The system’s detection and jamming capabilities extend up to 3 kilometres, providing ample early warning and reaction time. For laser neutralization, the effective range falls between 1 and 2.5 kilometres, depending on the specific wattage of the laser weapon deployed. This ensures targeted elimination of threats within a significant operating radius.

DRDO’s anti-drone system comes at a crucial time, particularly in light of increased drone activity along the western and northern borders. These incursions pose security challenges, and the ability to effectively neutralize such threats is paramount. DRDO’s system stands as a testament to India’s proactive approach in addressing these emerging dangers.

The successful deployment during the Republic Day celebrations serves as a validation of DRDO’s technological prowess. It paves the way for wider adoption of this versatile system across various security domains, not just along the borders but also in protecting critical infrastructure and sensitive installations.
