The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to complete its long-awaited reforms within the next three months, as announced by DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat. This development marks a significant step toward modernizing India’s premier defence research agency, aligning it with the government’s vision of self-reliance in defence technology under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
Dr. Kamat, who has been leading the DRDO since August 2022 and recently received a one-year tenure extension until May 2026, heads an Overseeing Committee tasked with implementing recommendations from the K. VijayRaghavan Committee.
The committee’s report, submitted in July 2024, proposed structural changes to enhance efficiency, reduce delays, and foster collaboration with industry and academia. The reforms include reorganizing DRDO’s 50-odd laboratories, establishing a Defence Technology Council, and attracting top talent to focus on cutting-edge technologies.
The August 31, 2025, deadline reflects the government’s push to overcome internal resistance and streamline operations. Despite opposition from some senior DRDO officials, progress is underway, with milestones already set for incomplete reforms. Recent moves, such as the merger of the Defence Food Research Laboratory with the Defence Research Development Establishment, signal initial steps toward a leaner organization.
