In an ode to the visionary former President and eminent scientist Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has unveiled the fifth edition of its prestigious innovation contest, ‘Dare to Dream 5.0’. Known for catalyzing groundbreaking innovations, this year’s contest introduces a significant challenge centered around the development of a Compact Solid State based Active Denial System (ADS) for non-lethal crowd control.
Following the overwhelming success of the fourth edition, ‘Dare to Dream 5.0’ seeks to inspire and empower innovators, startups, and researchers in advancing defence technologies. The contest is particularly focused on creating solutions that align with the needs of modern security scenarios, including urban and border management.
The ADS is an innovative non-lethal directed-energy weapon designed for crowd control by paramilitary units and law enforcement agencies. Here’s how it operates:
- RF Power Source: Utilizes an array of solid-state amplifiers operating at 95 GHz, delivering a power density of 1W/cm² at distances of either 25 meters or 50 meters. This high-frequency radio frequency (RF) beam is pivotal to the system’s effectiveness.
- Antenna & Radiating System: Specifically engineered to emit the RF beam with precision, ensuring the energy disperses over the intended area without causing permanent harm.
- Human Machine Interface (HMI): Allows operators to control and monitor the system’s output and safety protocols, ensuring the application of the RF beam is both effective and within legal and ethical bounds.
- Mounting Options: Designed for versatility, the ADS can be mounted on drones for aerial deployment or on vehicles for ground-based operations, providing adaptability to various operational environments.
The emphasis on drone or vehicle-based platforms underscores the need for mobility, quick deployment, and operational flexibility, which are crucial in dynamic conflict zones or during sudden outbreaks of public disorder.
