The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is urging Indian drone startups to take on an ambitious project: the development of swarm drones that can collectively function as a static early warning radar system to monitor incoming aerial threats. This cutting-edge initiative aims to leverage advances in drone technology and artificial intelligence to create an innovative, resilient, and deployable defense mechanism.
The concept involves using multiple drones equipped with small radar sensors to form an interconnected “wall” in the air. These swarm drones would collaborate to create a real-time radar array capable of detecting and tracking incoming aerial threats, such as missiles, drones, or low-flying aircraft.
What sets this system apart is its inherent resilience. Unlike traditional radar installations, which are static and vulnerable to targeted strikes, a drone swarm radar system can be dynamically reconfigured or disengaged in the air as needed. This ability to “disappear” makes it difficult for adversaries to neutralise the system, ensuring continuous surveillance and protection.
The drones will be powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to ensure precise coordination and data sharing. DRDO envisions the swarm system as an easily deployable alternative to traditional early warning systems, particularly for defending against saturation attacks or low-observable platforms like stealth drones.
DRDO plans to support participating startups through funding, technical mentorship, and access to testing facilities. By fostering collaboration between government agencies and the private sector, DRDO aims to accelerate the development of this revolutionary technology.
The swarm drone radar system has the potential to revolutionize how early warning systems are deployed and utilized. Beyond defense, such technology could find applications in disaster management, search and rescue missions, and border surveillance.
