Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has emphasized the need for greater collaboration among academia, the DRDO, and industry to address emerging challenges in defense research and development.
Speaking at the 15th Air Chief Marshal LM Khatre Memorial Lecture in Bengaluru on Saturday, Kamat highlighted the current siloed approach, where these entities often operate independently with limited overlap. He stressed the importance of a more integrated model that fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Kamat also underscored the critical need for capacity-building in India’s defense research ecosystem. While India produces a large number of engineers, many lack the necessary skills to engage in research and development (R&D) work. He called for a focus on upgrading engineering colleges, providing students with hands-on experience using state-of-the-art equipment, and solving research problems. This would ensure that graduates are equipped to contribute to cutting-edge research upon graduation.
Furthermore, Kamat pointed out that India is lagging behind most countries by 10-15 years in traditional technologies. However, by focusing on disruptive technologies, the country has the opportunity to leapfrog and achieve parity with global leaders.
The DRDO chief’s call for a more collaborative and innovative approach aligns with the government’s broader efforts to strengthen India’s defense capabilities and promote self-reliance in technology. By fostering closer ties between academia, the DRDO, and industry, India can accelerate its development of critical defense technologies and secure its national interests.
