The Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) has developed a cutting-edge Low-Density Ablative Material (LDAM) tailored for critical applications in missile systems. This innovative material serves as both an internal and external thermal protection solution, offering a significant improvement over conventional insulation systems such as PC-10, TPP/TPI, EPDM, and ROCASIN.
LDAM’s versatility allows it to be used in putty applications and for sealing joints, addressing key thermal and structural challenges in missile systems. Its unique properties ensure superior performance in areas requiring high thermal stability, making it suitable for metallic and composite sections alike.
LDAM is distinguished by its lower density compared to existing insulation materials, making it an ideal choice for weight-sensitive applications. Its ease of application and repairability set it apart from traditional systems, while its high thermal stability, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1200°C, ensures durability under extreme conditions.
Moreover, LDAM exhibits excellent structural integrity, which is essential for handling, transportation, and maintenance operations. Its adaptability to various surfaces and forms makes it suitable for diverse missile configurations, including those involving complex geometric shapes.
LDAM can be applied internally or externally through a spraying process that accommodates specific thickness requirements on both metallic and non-metallic surfaces. Additionally, it functions effectively as a putty for sealing joints, ensuring a seamless finish. The material is room-temperature curable, simplifying the application process without the need for high-temperature curing systems.
One of LDAM’s standout features is its green manufacturing process, which produces no by-products, reflecting DRDL’s commitment to environmentally sustainable innovations.
This new insulation technology is poised to revolutionize missile systems by enhancing their thermal protection, reducing weight, and simplifying maintenance. Its tailor-made properties make it an indispensable addition to India’s expanding missile arsenal, showcasing DRDL’s continuous strides in defence technology innovation.
