The Indian Navy has swiftly responded to a maritime incident in the Gulf of Aden. A Liberia-flagged MV MSC Sky II transiting approximately 90 nautical mile south-east of Gulf of Aden was reported on fire due to drone or missile attack on Tuesday.

According to the Indian Navy, the INS Kolkata deployed in the region for maritime security operations promptly responded and arrived at scene of the incident. A specialised firefighting team comprising 12 personnel from the INS Kolkata embarked the vessel in the early morning hours of Tuesday to assist in firefighting efforts.

Labour Minister Hsu Ming-chun issued an apology on Tuesday for her remarks regarding the planned recruitment of Indian migrant workers, which some have criticised as “racist,” as reported by Central News Agency Taiwan.

In an interview, Minister Hsu had stated that the ministry would initially focus on recruiting workers from northeastern India because ‘their skin colour and dietary habits are closer to ours.’ She further stated that ‘individuals in this region, mostly Christians, are skilled in manufacturing, construction, and farming, as per Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) assessments,’ as per Central News Agency.

A special NIA court in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday sent a man to six years of rigorous imprisonment for passing photographs and videos of sensitive Indian installations to agents working for Pakistani defence establishment and spy agency ISI. Mohammad Rashid, a resident of Varanasi, has been convicted by the NIA Special Court Lucknow in the espionage case registered in 2020.

The case was initially registered by ATS, Gomti Nagar in Lucknow, on January 19, 2020, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It was taken over and re-registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on April 6 of the same year.

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad on Tuesday arrested a married couple in Prayagraj for their alleged involvement in Naxal activities. The Anti-Terror Squad said in a statement that Kripashankar Singh (49) and his wife Binda Sona alias Manju alias Suman (41) were members of the banned CPI(Maoist) and were involved in plans to wage war against the nation.

According to the statement, the couple had in 2017-2018 given shelter to Naxalite Quanthan Srinivasan, who was carrying a reward of ? 5 lakh on him.

India’s aerospace giant, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is reportedly on the verge of signing a massive ?70,000 crore (approximately $8.5 billion) deal with various Indian defense public and private firms. This deal focuses on third-party supplies of parts and subsystems for the upcoming production of 97 additional Tejas Mk1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The reported deal signifies a significant push towards self-reliance in India’s defense sector. Companies like NAL (National Aerospace Laboratories), Dynamatic Technologies, Vem Technologies, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and TASL (Tata Advanced Systems Limited) are expected to benefit from this agreement. Stepping up his anti-India rhetoric, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that no Indian military personnel, not even those in civilian clothing, would be present inside his country after May 10, a media report said today.

President Muizzu’s statement comes less than a week after an Indian civilian team reached the Maldives to take charge of one of the three aviation platforms in the island nation, well ahead of the March 10 deadline agreed by the two nations for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel.

The relationship between the world’s two largest democracies, which have made significant progress in the last 20 years, now can be as ambitious as “we choose to be,” a top Indian diplomat has said.

“When I look at the broader relationship, the India-US strategic partnership, I think we have now reached a stage where we can say that the partnership has come into its own. We have achieved a lot over the past 70 years. But what we have achieved over the past 20 years has been at a different level altogether. And I would say that now we are at a stage where we can be as ambitious as we choose to be,” said India’s Deputy Ambassador to the US, Sripriya Ranganathan.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has lauded Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for his assertive stance on India’s oil procurement from Russia amid the conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov commended Jaishankar’s response during a speech at the United Nations, where he advised critics to focus on their own affairs and highlighted the West’s continued reliance on Russian oil.

Speaking at the World Youth Forum in Sochi, Lavrov recalled Jaishankar’s resolute words, emphasizing the importance of national dignity. “My friend, Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar, was once at the UN, giving a speech. He was asked why they started buying so much oil from Russia. He advised them to mind their own business and reminded them at the same time how much oil the West had started buying and continued to buy oil from the Russian Federation. This is national dignity,” Lavrov stated.

A man hailing from Kerala who died in an anti-tank missile attack on Israel’s northern border had gone there only two months ago to work in a poultry farm, his father said on Tuesday. While Nibin Maxwell, from Kollam in Kerala, was killed in the attack, two other Keralites — Bush Joseph George and Paul Melvin — were injured and are hospitalised.

Maxwell’s father said that it was his elder son who informed him about his younger son’s death. “My elder son called me around 4.30 pm on Monday and told me that Maxwell was injured in the attack and was hospitalised. Later, at around 12.45 am, he told me that my younger son had died,” the father told a TV channel.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar on Tuesday said they have approached the Defence Ministry for an approval of changing the nomenclature of various ranks as they now have women sailors also.

He also expressed hope that since gender neutrality has been introduced in the Indian Navy, it will have a woman chief in 30-35 years. He was addressing media persons during the inauguration of a new administrative building of the Naval War College (NWC) at Verem in North Goa.
