According to the report prepared by the Sandeep Unnithan for MailToday, INS Arighat which is sister class ship of INS Arihant will be ready for induction in Indian Navy by mid of this year since it is nearing its sea trials while biggest technological achievement of the Indian Navy and to India’s nuclear triad will be that the Nuclear Ballistic missile submarine was only known by its Internal code name as S4 is ready for its sea trials by end of this year.

S4 is an entended Arihant class design that has twice the weapons carrying capability than the Arihant class. S4 can carry 8 K-4 SLBM with a range of 3500km or 24 K-15 SLBM with a range of over 800km in its 8 vertical launch tubes. Continue reading


The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning to its integration to its entire fleet of 272 Su-30MKI fleets with indigenously developed Astra Mk1 Beyond Visual range air to air missile starting from 2022 onwards and also actively considering placing orders for the upgraded Rafael Advanced Defense Systems developed I-Derby ER (extended range) beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) with range of 100km.

Astra Mk1 and I-Derby ER both have a range of over 100km and both will compliment each other when integrated into Su-30MKI fleet after aging Russian-made Vympel R-77 (AA-12 ‘Adder’) AAMs are phased out of service due to lack of upgrades to the missile system over the years and poor shelf lives. IAF’s will have to wait little longer after First Four Final Operational Clearance (FOC) configuration LCA-Tejas aircraft which was scheduled to be delivered by HAL by end of March this month is likely to miss its target schedule due to last-minute changes and upgrades carried out on the first four LCA-Tejas to come out in FOC Configuration.

First FOC configured SP-21 carried out its Ground engine run, way back in November and it was decided it will get its crucial software upgrade from its partner Aeronautics Development Agency (ADA) to allow integration and firing of newer weapons along with the ability to handle the better rate of climb with better communication systems. Defense Ministry of Russia reportedly has offered India its latest TOS-2 ‘Tosochka’ heavy flamethrower vehicles for defeating enemy personnel in fortifications at recently concluded Defence Expo 2020. TOS-2 (the R&D work ‘Tosochka’) is a derivative of the TOS-1A ‘Solntsepyok’ heavy flamethrower system with improved performance characteristics. As compared to its predecessor, it is mounted on the wheeled chassis.

According to Russian designers, the heavy flamethrower systems are intended to destroy light-armor vehicles, incapacitation of the personnel deployed on open spaces or in shelters, initiate fires and smokescreens by smoke/incendiary munitions. TOS-2 are armed with fuel-air explosive munitions that use spraying of combustible material and explosion of the formed gas cloud. In terms of power, they are compared with midget tactical nuclear munitions, though they have no radiation effect.  Continue reading

PAF showcased 2 damaged R-73 Close Combat Air-to-Air missiles along with near intact 2 R-77 Beyond Visual range Air-to-Air missiles. In 2018, India’s plans to equip its Russian SU-30MKI and indigenous Light Combat Aircraft Tejas with long-range Meteor beyond visual range missiles after MBDA France informed the government that they would not integrate their weapon on any Israeli or Russian platform and even refused it to be integrated into a legacy platform like Mirage-2000 due to high cost.

While it looked like a unilateral decision by France imposed on other key partners in MBDA like the United Kingdom, India might have recently tasted some success in breaking this blockade when MBDA UK agreed to sell and integrate Meteor BVRAAMs on the upgraded Mirage-2000 fleet of Indian Air Force, which looks like a major disagreement with the MBDA France which was trying to make Meteor BVRAAMs, Dassault Rafale Exclusive to secure their chances for further orders of the same platform from India. No. 45 Squadron of the Indian Air Force (Flying Daggers) based at Sulur AFS, Tamil Nadu, which is also the first LCA-Tejas Mk1 Squadron has clocked 2000 sorties in last three years with just a small fleet of 18 aircraft said the latest report from the Squadron. Tejas Mk1 aircraft in possession of the Squadron have been averaging at least two sorties per day and many of the pilots from the Squadron are all praise of the indigenously developed fighter jet.

The bulk of the sorties have been clocked in the last 18 months after deliveries of IOC-Configured Tejas Mk1 by HAL said a HAL official close to and many teething issues have been resolved at an even faster pace due to continued availability of HAL technicians at the base. Continue reading

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has announced that it will be showcasing for the first time, it’s in-house developed 3rd Generation Fire and Forget anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) at DefExpo2020 in Lucknow next month.

BDL already has developed Amogha-1 a second-generation ATGM with a 2.8 km range which is based on the wire-guided tech which was tested in 2016 and also went on to develop Amogha-2 which was Wireless Anti-Tank Missile with RF Guidance but the new 3rd Generation Fire and Forget anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) will be called Amogha-3. A committee headed by VK Saraswat which is looking into the development of a new indigenous 110kN class aero gas turbine engine for India’s Advanced Multirole Combat Aircraft (AMCA) has been taking feedback from both Private, Public and Academics in the country on ways to develop an new engine which doesn’t exist anywhere in the world.

Among many feedbacks from all sector, a majority of them are urging to build a consortium company with many key stakeholders who should be in charge of developing the new engine locally instead of an international collaboration with a foreign Aero-Engine maker if we aim to be import free and less dependent on foreign engine manufactures in the future. India for last few years has been looking to upgrade its mainstay Su 30MKI fighter fleet under “Super Sukhoi” upgrade program to keep them modernized for next 20 years or so and some sense of urgency has been building up since now craft-type will turn 18 this year since its induction in 2002 but the technology is close to 25 years old now and has been in production without any changes.

HAL is expected to deliver the last batch of Su-30MKI ordered by IAF in March this year and, likely, IAF will also sign a contract for an additional 8 Su-30MKI as attrition replacement to the aircraft which were lost in last few years. State-run aircraft maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is expected to ink the final contract order for the construction of 83 Tejas Mk1A at the 11th edition of the biennial mega defense exhibition ” DefExpo 2020 ” to be held from 5th to 8th of Next month at Vrindavan Yojna, Sector 15, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

After months of negotiations, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) have fixed the price of the LCA-Tejas Mark 1A at about Rs 310 crore per fighter which is $43M per craft which is $20.5M more than the price agreed upon for manufacturing of 40 Tejas Mk1. Tejas Mk1A will come equipped with Next Generation Digital flight control computer (DFCC) borrowed from Tejas Mk2 program and will feature Dual Pylon for CCM and External ELL-8222WB self-protection jammer pod along with Elta’s ELM-52 X-Band Fire Control Radar, along with host of upgrades to its avionics and software and some minor improvements in its radar cross-section (RCS) and will be easy to maintain. Dr. Girsh S Deodhare, director of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has confirmed that India is working on the development of an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System which is an aircraft software system to prevent crash of an aircraft if Pilot faces a g-induced loss of consciousness while flying the jet.

Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System will help regain control of the aircraft in case the pilot loses consciousness or is incapacitated. A helmet-mounted sensor will alert ground control, which will be able to take over the aircraft’s controls to safely land the aircraft. “It is an artificial intelligence-based application.
