State-run aircraft maker Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is expected to ink the final contract order for the construction of 83 Tejas Mk1A at the 11th edition of the biennial mega defense exhibition ” DefExpo 2020 ” to be held from 5th to 8th of Next month at Vrindavan Yojna, Sector 15, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

After months of negotiations, Indian Air Force (IAF) and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) have fixed the price of the LCA-Tejas Mark 1A at about Rs 310 crore per fighter which is $43M per craft which is $20.5M more than the price agreed upon for manufacturing of 40 Tejas Mk1. Tejas Mk1A will come equipped with Next Generation Digital flight control computer (DFCC) borrowed from Tejas Mk2 program and will feature Dual Pylon for CCM and External ELL-8222WB self-protection jammer pod along with Elta’s ELM-52 X-Band Fire Control Radar, along with host of upgrades to its avionics and software and some minor improvements in its radar cross-section (RCS) and will be easy to maintain. Dr. Girsh S Deodhare, director of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has confirmed that India is working on the development of an Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System which is an aircraft software system to prevent crash of an aircraft if Pilot faces a g-induced loss of consciousness while flying the jet.

Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System will help regain control of the aircraft in case the pilot loses consciousness or is incapacitated. A helmet-mounted sensor will alert ground control, which will be able to take over the aircraft’s controls to safely land the aircraft. “It is an artificial intelligence-based application. As soon as the first pictures of India’s upcoming XRSAM Air defense became viral in the defense community in India, many simply couldn’t ignore to talk about similarities of the missile system with the BARAK ER Integrated Air & Missile Defense System showcased by the Israel Aerospace Industries a few years back which basically was Barak’s dual pulse rocket motor mated to an additional booster for a range of 150 km with enhanced theater ballistic missile (TBM ) capabilities.

DRDO for the first time has revealed details of the upcoming Air Missile Defence System which will be developed by Hyderabad-based Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) which is entrusted to develop a multi-disciplinary Missile System for India’s armed forces. DRDO website now has a section on the XRSAM program where it shared some interesting details along with the first graphics of the upcoming missile system.

XRSAM (eXtra Long Range Surface to Air Missile) Weapon system is been developed for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and according to DRDO, IAF has accepted the configuration offered by the DRDO with the capabilities to develop a Long Range Surface to Air Missile Weapon system to neutralize aircraft’s, Sea skimming Anti-ship missiles (AShM) and Ballistic missiles in the terminal stage. Earlier this year India and the United States have suspended cooperation on jet engine technology under the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) due to lack of progress of the joint working group which failed to make any progress due to stiff US export controls and General Electric which is not keen on transfer of its core proprietary technology to India.

General Electric is pushing for joint venture company, under the local license agreement allow the new JV to built and service derivative of the F-414 engines which were proposed to be used as a base to develop a new engine to power India’s 5th generation AMCA Stealth program, but minus its core technology which was sole reason why no agreement arrived yet, defense analysts close to say that even if the US government agrees to loosen its export control laws it simply can’t force a private engine manufacture to agree to its terms. After the Indian Air force (IAF) agreed to induct AMCA Mk1 with older Ge’s F414-INS6 engines with a combined thrust of 196 kN Thrust class instead of the required combined 220 kN Thrust class, IAF officials to have confirmed that breather given to the Mk1 program will allow time for finding a right partner joint venture partner to develop a customized engine for the AMCA program.

India has been having parallel talks with the United States and France for co-development of a new engine which can develop a 110 kN Thrust class engine suitable to operate in hot-humid climate conditions of India where the performance of engines is always below par and most of the time while operating from hot-humid conditions where there is noted drop of at least 10kN thrust. Girish Deodhare, chief of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has confirmed that MWF-Mk2 will come equipped with indigenously developed Uttam AESA radar from the start from 2022 when the aircraft will be rolled out for its first flight in 2023, he also confirmed that even though India’s state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has placed orders for ELM-2052 AESA fire control radars along with pod-mounted ELL-8222W (wideBand) self-protection jamming pod from Israeli’s ELTA, there is scope that Uttam will also be equipped on Tejas Mk-1A.

Deodhare also said that Uttam AESA Fire control Radar (FCR) which has been flying onboard LSP-2 has completed 11 successful test flights and within a couple of more years of flight testing it will be certified and it will be ready for production and will be available to be equipped on Tejas Mk-1A. Rostec officials have confirmed that Indian officials have been getting a regular briefing on the progress of the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jet program from them and are still hopeful that India will be among the first few countries who will procure Stealth Su-57E fighter jets from Russia in near foresee, as per information provided to, Russia is keen to address issues pointed out by IAF with the aircraft as it gears up to mass manufacture the aircraft for the Russian air force.  

Su-57 has conducted 16 flights with the second stage engine known as Item 30 which comes equipped with a fully electronic automatic control system and ensures the fighter’s super-maneuverability, thrust-to-weight ratio, stealth characteristics and the ability to perform cruising flights at supersonic speed. The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) official has confirmed that Medium Weight Fighter or (MWF) won’t be having Technology demonstrator aircraft nor PV (Prototype Vehicle) aircraft in its initial development stage and instead the first aircraft for which metal cutting will start from next year to be ready for first flight by 2024 will be Limited Series Production (LSP) standard aircraft with Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) configuration.

LCA-Tejas Mk1 program had Two TD aircraft which demonstrated basic technologies like flight characters and controls and later the program moved to PV stage under which 5 aircraft were produced to fast track developmental phase where aircraft came with some of the technologies required for a combat aircraft the last phase saw the construction of 8 LSP standard aircraft where pre-production aircraft had almost all the technologies requested by the user for final production model. ADA’s Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) program for Indian Navy hasn’t seen any official reaction from the Indian Air Force (IAF) yet but was able to get in touch with senior ranked air force official who acknowledged that IAF was aware of the program but still decided to stick with the Medium Weight Fighter (MWF)- Mk 2 showcased at Aero India 2019 earlier this year.

When asked if IAF will be interested in an air force version if ADA offers a spin-off of the TEDBF program, official was non-committal about plans but did say that IAF Top management might consider ordering few units if the aircraft meets IAF’s requirement and if they are delays in the MWF-Mk2 program while TEDBF program sticks to the program schedule of the first flight by 2026. Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) program for the Indian Navy aims to provide a 24-tonne Twin-engine fighter aircraft which will replace the Mig-29K fleet in the Indian Navy. Navy has asked ADA for TEDBF to be better than the Russian Supplied Mig-29K fighter jets which currently operates on the deck of INS Vikramaditya. Indian Navy joined the LCA-Navy Mk1 program a little late in 2004-5 fully knowing that it won’t be able to meet its operational requirements, initial funding was to develop technologies required to develop an Mk2 fighter jet which can operate from the deck of the aircraft carrier.

In 2016, Indian Navy was having second thoughts on the development of the single-engined medium role Naval Mk2 fighter jet and had informed ADA that it could rather invest in a Twin engined 5th generation stealth aircraft over a single-engined Naval Mk2 and soon it was decided that Naval Mk2 program will be abandoned and ADA will start clean slate 4.5 generation fighter jet program for the Indian Navy . Dr. Girish Deodhare program Director of ADA speaking to Business Standard for the first time has confirmed that Aeronautical Development Agency is indeed working on the development of a carrier-based Twin engine Mark-2 Program for the Indian Navy, while it prepares to demonstrate landing and take-off capabilities of single-engined Naval-LCA from the Aircraft Carrier INS Vikramaditya by March 2020.

ADA earlier this year at Aero India 2019 had showcased a Navy-LCA Mk2 with Max takeoff weight (MTOW) of around 16.5 tonnes powered by a single-engine supplied by US engine-maker General Electric (GE) F414IN engine generating 98 kN thrust class but it was rejected by the Indian Navy due to Thrust to weight ratio and Navy also wanted safety of the second engine for smooth carrier deck operations. State-owned defense manufacturer Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd already has roped in in private players including L&T (wings), Dynamatic Technologies Ltd (front fuselage), VEM Technologies (center fuselage) and Alpha Doca (rear fuselage) to execute orders for 83 Tejas Mk1A which will be inked by end of March 2020 with Indian Air Force (IAF). But with IAF already showing interest to procure 200 Medium Weight Fighter or (MWF) in near future soon, HAL and Private defense companies are already in talks to further expand the scope of private defense firms in the supply chain so that the order for nearly 200 jets can be executed without delays in the supply chain once the contract is inked.

MWF program is racing against time with its own since current IAF Chief has given strict instructions that order for 200 jets will depend on how fast the aircraft can be ready for production provided it also meets full mission capabilities sought by the Indian air force as AMCA-TD Phase 1 will commence at the same time when MWF will start its flight trials and developmental phase will be around the 2023-25 period. With India’s 5th Generation Stealth AMCA Program all set to go critical from next year with the official monetary sanction for the funding for the program, ADA has revealed further changes to the design aspects of the final AMCA design which is likely to be frozen soon and will now feature Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) which were not shown in the previous mock models displayed in various defense exhibition in the country . While was first to show DSI equipped Computer-Aided Design (CAD) image of the AMCA with DSI inlet in its previous reports it was not confirmed if it will make it to the final AMCA design at that time.

Scaled Models displayed of the AMCA by ADA in last few months also featured 2D Ramped intake but switch to the 3D Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) has been under works for some time now and after design refinements and wind tunnel testing it has been cleared to be featured from the first Technology Demonstrator (TD)-1 onwards.
