In a significant move, the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to introduce millets in the meals of personnel of CAPFs and the NDRF, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the International Year of Millets-2023.

The decision to introduce 30% millets in the meals has been taken as per the directive of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, after detailed discussions with all the forces. The United Nations has declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets, recognising the importance of millets and creating domestic and global demand for them, while also providing nutritious food to people.

Millets are known to be good for health and beneficial for farmers, and they are also environment-friendly. These energy-dense, protein-rich, and gluten-free grains are drought-resistant and require less water, making them easier to grow in arid soils and hilly terrain, and less susceptible to pests.
