Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, the commander of the Brazilian Navy, has expressed interest in collaborating with India’s Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) for a major refit of its Scorpène-class submarines.

Brazil operates the Riachuelo-class submarines, which are based on the French Scorpène design. The Indian Navy also has a fleet of six Kalvari-class submarines, which are essentially the same as the Riachuelo-class.

As the Riachuelo-class submarines approach their first major refit after approximately 10 years of service, the Brazilian Navy is exploring options to ensure their continued operational readiness. MDL, with its extensive experience in submarine construction and maintenance, is a potential partner for this undertaking.

A collaboration between Brazil and India in the submarine refit sector could offer several benefits. India’s expertise in maintaining and upgrading Scorpène-class submarines could be invaluable to Brazil. Additionally, such a partnership could strengthen bilateral ties and promote technological exchange.

While the specific details of the potential collaboration are yet to be finalized, Admiral Olsen’s statement indicates a growing interest in India’s capabilities in the submarine maintenance and refit sector.
