In a significant leap forward in missile technology, BrahMos Aerospace has commenced work on the BrahMos-LR (Long Range) variant, a new iteration of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with an extended range of 800km, while retaining its Mach 3 speeds. This advancement follows the successful development of the BrahMos-ER (Extended Range) variant, which boasts a range of 450km, surpassing the earlier MTCR-restricted range of 290km.

The BrahMos-LR’s development marks a pivotal moment in overcoming the constraints imposed by the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). The earlier BrahMos Block-III was limited to a 290km range due to these international agreements. However, by modifying software restrictions and expanding the internal fuel tank capacity, BrahMos Aerospace has pushed past these barriers, significantly enhancing the missile’s operational range.

The key to achieving the 800km range involves increasing the missile’s length to accommodate a larger fuel tank for the ramjet engine. This adjustment ensures that the BrahMos-LR can maintain its supersonic speed over longer distances.

BrahMos Aerospace is also focused on ensuring backward compatibility for the new missile variants. The BrahMos-ER is being engineered to be compatible with existing launchers, a critical factor for seamless integration with the Indian Army’s current missile systems. This effort not only reduces costs but also accelerates deployment timelines.

The Indian Army is expected to prioritize the BrahMos-ER for ground-based operations, leveraging its extended range and precision for deep strike missions. The IAF is likely to adopt the air-launched version of the BrahMos-ER for strategic missions. Its extended range and Mach 3 speed make it ideal for penetrating deep into enemy territory while evading advanced air defences.
