Boeing which has recently won orders from the US Air Force (USAF) for its Boeing E-7 Wedgetail to replace its Boeing E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft has claimed that India, Japan, and Qatar have shown interest in procuring E-7 and same has been offered to them.
Boeing E-7 Wedgetail is based on the Boeing 737 Next Generation platform and interestingly aircraft type that is often considered as its direct rival is Airbus A321 aircraft that India has chosen to be used as a platform to mount the DRDO developed Netra Mk2 Suite for indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&CS) program.
It’s not clear why India will be interested in the E-7 Wedgetail which is quite similar to the Netra Mk2 AEW&CS program that DRDO is developing for the Indian Air force. Boeing 737 platform that is already modified to be used as AEW&CS is the only advantage that it has over Airbus A321 which till now hasn’t been modified into an AEW&CS platform and India might be the first customer to do so for its requirements.
