The Bhargavastra Vehicle Mounted Counter Swarm Drone System (VMCSDS), developed by the Solar Group, is undergoing significant refinement to meet the Indian Army’s evolving requirements. This advanced system has been under development for several years, with Solar Group actively responding to user specifications and requests for proposals (RFPs) as part of its iterative design and development process.
While the system remains in its pre-production stages, the Solar Group is optimistic about its progress. “We have been developing this product for the last couple of years and are working on fine-tuning the specifications based on user requirements. Once the RFP is finalized and orders are received, we will proceed with production. However, this is a long-term project that could take one to two years to materialize fully,” a company representative stated.
The Bhargavastra system has been engineered to address the increasingly critical threat drone swarms pose. Leveraging a combination of cutting-edge detection and interception technologies, it offers robust capabilities designed for rapid response in hostile scenarios.
The system boasts an impressive detection range of over 5 kilometres, even for targets with a radar cross-section (RCS) as small as 0.01 square meters. Once threats are detected, Bhargavastra can lock onto and neutralize targets in under 16 seconds. It is capable of simultaneously tracking and engaging up to 64 targets, demonstrating its efficacy in handling large-scale swarm attacks.
At its core, the Bhargavastra employs a kill system powered by micro missiles, which utilize a lock-on-after-launch mechanism and home in on targets autonomously. The system can launch multiple missiles at intervals of just one second, ensuring effective engagement with high-density swarms. Supporting this capability is a sophisticated suite of sensors, including radar and electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) systems, which work in tandem to provide accurate target identification and tracking.
This vehicle-mounted solution has been designed with adaptability and mobility in mind, ensuring that it can be deployed across various operational terrains to provide critical counter-drone capabilities. As the Indian Army continues to refine its requirements, the Bhargavastra system is positioned to become a vital tool in India’s defence arsenal, addressing modern challenges in unmanned aerial threats.
The next phase of development and qualification will be critical as Solar Group works to meet the stringent standards of the armed forces. With its promising specifications and rapid response capabilities, Bhargavastra has the potential to set a new benchmark in counter-swarm drone systems, aligning with India’s focus on indigenously developed defence technologies.
