Earlier this year, Baba Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Forge, sent ripples through the Indian defense sector with a bold announcement: the company is developing a light tank under 25 tonnes. This move signifies a significant step towards self-reliance in India’s military hardware production.
The project has captured the imagination of defense enthusiasts, with a purported CAD image of the light tank circulating online. While the image’s authenticity remains unconfirmed, it offers a glimpse into the potential features of this innovative vehicle.
According to company officials who spoke to idrw.org in 2023, the light tank is expected to be equipped with a suite of advanced technologies, including:
- Integrated Fire Control System: This system seamlessly integrates targeting, tracking, and weapon firing capabilities, enhancing accuracy and lethality.
- Electric Stabilized Gunner Sight Turret Drive: This allows for precise aiming and target engagement on the move, even in rough terrain.
- Panoramic Sight: This provides the commander with a 360-degree view of the battlefield, improving situational awareness.
- Shrapnel Detection Countermeasures: This crucial system safeguards the crew from the dangers of exploding artillery shells.
- Powerpack, Tracks & Suspension: These components ensure optimal mobility and performance across diverse terrains.
- Explosive Reactive Armor Package (ERA): This additional layer of protection can significantly mitigate the impact of enemy anti-tank weapons.
- ACU+APU (Auxiliary Cooling Unit + Auxiliary Power Unit): These systems ensure optimal engine performance and provide power for onboard electronics even when the main engine is off.
- Laser Warning System: This alerts the crew to laser threats, enabling them to take evasive action.
- Integrated Battlefield Management System (IBMS): This advanced system facilitates secure communication and data exchange between the light tank and other battlefield assets.
- Shot Detection System: This technology helps pinpoint the location of enemy fire, allowing for a swift response.
While details remain under wraps, the potential capabilities outlined by company officials suggest that Bharat Forge’s light tank could be a game-changer for the Indian Army.
The ability to deploy a highly mobile and well-protected light tank in mountainous regions like the Himalayas, where conventional battle tanks struggle, would be a significant advantage. Additionally, the focus on domestic development aligns with India’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
