In a significant milestone for India’s defense indigenization efforts, Advanced Weapons & Equipment India Ltd. (AW&EIL) handed over the first two indigenously developed Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) barrels to the Indian Navy at its Field Gun Factory (FGK) in Kanpur. The ceremonial handover was presided over by Umesh Singh, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of AW&EIL, who presented the barrels to Rear Admiral Rupak Barua, Director General of Naval Armament Inspection (DGNAI). The event took place in the presence of AW&EIL’s Director of Operations, Director of Finance, and Shri K.R. Sinha, Executive Director of FGK, who warmly welcomed the distinguished guests.
The SRGM barrels, critical components of the 76mm naval gun system used on Indian Navy warships, mark a major step toward self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The Field Gun Factory, a key production unit of AW&EIL, was lauded for its efforts in indigenizing this sophisticated weapon system, which is integral to the Navy’s surface warfare capabilities. The 76mm SRGM, known for its high rate of fire and precision, is a cornerstone of naval defense, equipping frontline warships like the Shivalik-class frigates and Delhi-class destroyers.
The successful development and delivery of the SRGM barrels underscore AW&EIL’s commitment to the Indian government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. Rear Admiral Rupak Barua praised the FGK team for their technical expertise and dedication, noting that the indigenization of the SRGM barrels enhances the Indian Navy’s operational readiness while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. “This achievement is a testament to India’s growing prowess in defense manufacturing and the collaborative efforts of AW&EIL and the Indian Navy,” he said during the ceremony.
Umesh Singh, CMD of AW&EIL, highlighted the significance of the milestone, stating, “The handover of these indigenously developed SRGM barrels is a proud moment for AW&EIL and the Field Gun Factory. It reflects our unwavering commitment to innovation and self-reliance in defense production. We are honored to contribute to the Indian Navy’s mission to safeguard our maritime frontiers.”
Shri K.R. Sinha, Executive Director of FGK, welcomed the guests and emphasized the factory’s pivotal role in advancing India’s defense capabilities. The FGK, established over a century ago, has evolved into a hub for advanced weapon manufacturing, specializing in artillery and naval gun systems. The indigenization of the SRGM barrels involved overcoming significant technical challenges, including precision engineering and stringent quality standards required for naval applications. The factory’s efforts were widely appreciated by all attendees, with special mention of its workforce’s dedication and technical ingenuity.
The 76mm SRGM is a versatile naval weapon system designed for engaging surface, air, and shore-based targets. Its rapid-fire capability, coupled with advanced fire control systems, makes it a critical asset for the Indian Navy’s operational requirements. The indigenization of the SRGM barrels ensures a steady supply chain, reduces maintenance costs, and enhances the Navy’s ability to sustain prolonged operations without relying on imported components.
