India’s military relationship with the United States has witnessed a significant expansion in recent years, characterized by a surge in arms transfers. According to media reports, India’s arms imports from the US have reached nearly $15 billion in just the past seven years.
This substantial increase in arms transfers reflects a strategic shift in India’s defense procurement strategy, as the country seeks to modernize its military capabilities and enhance its strategic autonomy. The US has emerged as a key supplier of advanced military equipment, meeting India’s growing demand for sophisticated weapons systems.
Some of the major arms deals between India and the US include:
MK 54 MOD Lightweight Torpedoes: These torpedoes are used for anti-submarine warfare.
MH-60R Seahawk helicopters: These multi-mission helicopters are designed for a variety of roles, including anti-submarine warfare, maritime patrol, and search and rescue.
C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft: One last unsold C-17 military transport aircraft that are capable of carrying troops, equipment, and vehicles over long distances was procured
Apache AH-64E helicopters: These attack helicopters are equipped with advanced weapons systems and are used for close air support and anti-tank operations.
MK 45 naval guns: These naval guns are used for surface warfare and coastal defense.
Harpoon missiles: These anti-ship missiles are designed to target enemy surface vessels.
P-8I anti-submarine aircraft: Four maritime patrol aircraft are used for anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and search and rescue were procured.
MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft: 31 drones were recently procured. These drones are used for surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike missions.
