Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), a cornerstone in India’s defense manufacturing sector, is set to make a significant impact at Aero India 2025. The premier biennial air show, scheduled to take place in Bengaluru, will witness AVNL showcasing the unparaded engines of both the T-90 and Arjun Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), highlighting India’s strides in indigenous defense technology.
AVNL, established as part of the restructuring of the Ordnance Factory Board, has been at the forefront of producing armoured vehicles for the Indian Armed Forces. The Aero India event will provide a platform for AVNL to unveil the intricacies of the engines that power some of the most formidable tanks in the Indian military arsenal.
The T-90, known as Bhishma in India, is an advanced variant of the Russian T-series tanks, customized for Indian conditions. AVNL’s display will focus on the engine’s capabilities, which have been significantly modified and enhanced through local innovation. The engine’s robustness, especially in extreme climatic conditions, and its integration with advanced Indian-made systems will be a key highlight.
The Arjun tank represents India’s ambition to develop a completely indigenous tank. The engine showcased by AVNL will be the latest iteration, potentially the “Arjun” project engine, which has been in development to move away from reliance on foreign technology. This engine, symbolizing India’s push towards self-reliance, aims to provide superior performance metrics like power, torque, and reliability tailored for the Indian battlefield.
