Aerospace giant Airbus is gearing up to showcase its cutting-edge Eurodrone MALE UAV in India, with a potential showcasing scale model slated for the upcoming Aero India air show in 2025. This move underscores the company’s keen interest in tapping into the burgeoning Indian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market.
The Eurodrone, a collaborative venture between Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, represents a significant leap forward in UAV technology. Designed for operation in non-segregated airspace, it offers unmatched capabilities in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR). The aircraft’s modular design allows for customization based on specific mission requirements.
With its larger-than-life dimensions compared to the renowned MQ-9A Reaper, the twin-engine Eurodrone boasts impressive endurance and payload capacity. Although primarily conceived for ISR, the platform can be optionally armed with weapons like the MBDA Akeron LP missile, expanding its operational versatility.
India is already negotiating with United States for purchase of 31 MQ-9B UAVs and alrady has placed orders for Heron Mk2 and Hermes 900 UAVs from Israel. India’s very own Tapas MALE UAV will also enter production soon with orders for 10 units coming from IAF and Indian Navy but no major orders for around 150 units which is combined requirement of the Indian Armed forces have not taken place yet.
India’s growing emphasis on indigenisation and self-reliance in the defence sector presents a lucrative opportunity for Airbus. While showcasing a scale model of the Eurodrone’s capabilities on Indian soil, the company might want to position itself as a strategic partner in the country’s UAV development journey, but the race already has too many competition.
