In a landmark move for India’s aerospace sector, Airbus Helicopters and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) have partnered to establish a final assembly line (FAL) for the H125 helicopter in Kolar, Karnataka. Announced on May 27, 2025, this facility marks India’s first privately-operated helicopter assembly plant, a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward self-reliance in aerospace manufacturing under the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The plant will produce H125 helicopters for the Indian market and neighboring countries, with plans for future expansion to meet growing regional demand.

The H125, a versatile single-engine helicopter from Airbus’s Ecureuil family, is renowned for its performance in high-altitude operations, hot climates, and diverse mission profiles, including emergency medical services, law enforcement, disaster relief, and passenger transport. With over 7,000 units delivered globally and a strong presence in the Asia-Pacific region, the H125 is well-suited to address India’s unique operational needs, particularly in challenging terrains like the Himalayas.

The Kolar facility will assemble H125 helicopters from imported knockdown kits, integrating locally manufactured components to achieve up to 50% indigenization over time. TASL, a key player in India’s defense and aerospace sectors, brings its expertise in manufacturing aero-structures and systems for platforms like the C-295 transport aircraft and Apache attack helicopters. Airbus, a global leader in aerospace, will provide technical know-how, training, and supply chain support to ensure the facility meets international standards.

“This partnership is a game-changer for India’s aerospace ecosystem,” said a senior official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. “The H125 FAL not only strengthens India’s manufacturing capabilities but also positions the country as a potential export hub for helicopters in South Asia.” The facility is expected to create over 500 direct and indirect jobs, fostering skill development and boosting the local economy in Karnataka.

The establishment of the H125 FAL aligns with the Indian government’s push for self-reliance in defense and aerospace manufacturing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India campaign has prioritized indigenous production to reduce reliance on imports, and this initiative is a concrete step in that direction. The Kolar plant will cater to India’s growing demand for civil and parapublic helicopters, driven by initiatives like the UDAN scheme for regional connectivity and the modernization of law enforcement and emergency services.

India’s helicopter market is projected to grow significantly, with demand for over 300 civil and parapublic helicopters by 2030, according to industry estimates. The H125’s versatility makes it ideal for applications ranging from heli-tourism in the Northeast to disaster response in coastal and mountainous regions. The facility will also export helicopters to neighboring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, where similar operational needs exist. Posts on X have highlighted enthusiasm for the project, with users noting its potential to establish India as a regional aerospace hub.
