India and Vietnam are inching closer to sealing a significant defense deal involving the acquisition of the BrahMos missile system, valued at approximately USD 700 million. With both nations working diligently to finalize procedural and technical details, the agreement could be signed within the next couple of months.
Sources indicate that the Vietnamese Defence Ministry has already reviewed and discussed the initial techno-commercial details shared by BrahMos Aerospace (BAPL). The draft agreement, which includes specifics such as the total deal value, delivery timelines, and payment terms, is awaited by Vietnam to move forward with the formal signing.
The deal represents a milestone in India-Vietnam defense cooperation and is expected to involve orders for the BrahMos missile system from both the Vietnamese Army and Navy. Known for its precision strike capabilities, the BrahMos missile system offers significant strategic advantages, including supersonic speed, a range of over 400 km, and versatility for use on land, sea, and air platforms.
Vietnam is expected to benefit from India’s willingness to share advanced defence technologies, including associated infrastructure and training support. The deal could open avenues for further collaborations, such as the co-development of next-generation missile systems or localized production to enhance Vietnam’s defense manufacturing base.
The BrahMos missile system is a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia. Its export potential has been a key focus for India, aligning with the government’s push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing and expanding its footprint in the global arms market.
