Former Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti stated that if Jawaharlal Nehru had not been the country’s leader at the time, Jammu and Kashmir would not have been admitted to India. Mehbooba Mufti told journalists in Srinagar that Jammu and Kashmir was annexed to India while keeping in mind the country’s secular system and the secular and democratic ideals of Jawaharlal Nehru, Maharaja Hari Singh, and the founder of the National Conference Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah.

Mehbooba Mufti made this statement in response to Bharatiya Janata Party statements in which they repeatedly stated that the Jammu and Kashmir problem arose due to Jawaharlal Nehru’s weak leadership.

“Electricity is being sent from Kashmir to other parts of the country,” Mehbooba Mufti said, “but the people here are without electricity in winter.” She slammed the Ganderbal District Magistrate’s order prohibiting electric feeders and other heating devices, calling it “a shameful directive deserving of criticism.”
