In recent years, pilots of India’s indigenous Tejas Mk1 fighter jet have been seen using various types of aviation helmets, with multiple sightings revealing a blend of both international and locally sourced equipment. These helmets are crucial for pilot safety, performance, and communication, especially during high-speed maneuvers and complex mission profiles. The following article provides a breakdown of the four aviation helmets observed being used by Tejas Mk1 pilots, each playing a unique role in flight operations.

One of the aviation helmets seen on Tejas Mk1 pilots is the Guéneau 458, equipped with the Ulmer 82 oxygen mask. Manufactured by the French company L’Optique Scientifique Guéneau, this helmet is known for its versatility and is compatible with various fighter aircraft including the Rafale, Mirage, Eurofighter, Sukhoi, and MiG. The Guéneau 458 is available in three sizes and has been widely adopted across several air forces around the world. Its ability to work with different types of aircraft, including American models such as the F-15, F-16, F-18, and even training aircraft like the Hawk, makes it a popular choice for both seasoned and test pilots.

Another helmet seen in use by Tejas Mk1 pilots is the Guéneau FPH 500, also fitted with the Ulmer 82 mask. Like the Guéneau 458, this helmet is produced by the same French company and offers similar benefits in terms of versatility and compatibility with a wide range of fighter jets from different origins—be it Russian, American, or European. The FPH 500 provides advanced head protection and integrates modern communication systems essential for complex combat operations.

The third aviation helmet, and arguably the most commonly seen among Tejas Mk1 pilots, is the Israeli-supplied Elbit DASH IV, also fitted with the Ulmer 82 mask. The Elbit DASH IV (Display and Sight Helmet) is renowned for its advanced technology, which allows pilots to lock onto targets simply by looking at them. This helmet-mounted display system (HMDS) enhances situational awareness and is integrated with Tejas Mk1’s avionics, giving pilots a significant advantage during combat. The inclusion of the Ulmer 82 mask ensures the pilots receive an efficient oxygen supply, crucial during high-altitude and high-G-force maneuvers.

The MSA Gallet LA 100, manufactured by U.S.-based MSA Safety, is another aviation helmet that has been seen in use by Tejas Mk1 pilots. This helmet, equipped with the Ulmer 82 mask, is known for its lightweight design and superior protection. While it lacks the helmet-mounted display capabilities of the Elbit DASH IV, the LA 100 offers excellent comfort and reliability for pilots during routine operations and training missions.

Interestingly, the Guéneau 458 and Guéneau FPH 500 helmets have been predominantly seen on senior Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots during test sorties with the Tejas Mk1. These pilots, often senior former Test Pilot officers or those involved in developmental testing in Past, seem to prefer these French-made helmets, which suggests they may be using their equipment rather than standard-issue helmets. On the other hand, squadron pilots, who are regularly assigned to Tejas Mk1 units, typically wear the Elbit DASH IV, which appears to be the regular issue for combat and operational flights.

The diverse range of aviation helmets seen on Tejas Mk1 pilots highlights the Indian Air Force’s emphasis on integrating international technologies to meet the varied demands of their pilots. From the French-manufactured Guéneau helmets to the Israeli Elbit DASH IV with its helmet-mounted display, and the U.S.-made MSA Gallet LA 100, Tejas Mk1 pilots are equipped with some of the best protective and functional gear available. This eclectic mix of helmets reflects not only the global partnerships India has cultivated in its defense procurement but also the specialized requirements of different pilot roles, whether it be for operational sorties or high-stakes test flights.
