In a significant boost to India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities, the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) has attracted interest from 25 companies keen to collaborate on the development of a new engine, according to insights shared with idrw.org. This interest is driven by GTRE’s upcoming partnership with foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to develop an advanced engine for the AMCA program.

The enthusiasm from these companies stems from their extensive experience in handling high-temperature materials, a critical aspect of modern jet engine technology. Many of these companies have a long history of serving as supply partners for international aerospace engine manufacturers, which has equipped them with the necessary expertise and capabilities.

The ability to work with materials that can withstand extreme temperatures is crucial for the engine’s components like turbine blades and combustion chambers. Companies with this expertise are particularly valuable for ensuring the new engine’s performance and durability.

The long-standing involvement of these firms in aerospace supply chains means they bring a wealth of knowledge, not just in manufacturing but also in quality control, testing, and integration of complex systems.

Many will form part of the broader supply chain, contributing to various stages of engine manufacturing from raw material processing to final assembly. This local participation not only supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative but also reduces dependency on foreign suppliers.

The engine will be manufactured within India, with GTRE overseeing the process to ensure compliance with military specifications, quality standards, and strategic objectives. This approach will foster technology absorption and skill development within the country.
