Secretary R&D and DRDO Chairman Dr. Sateesh Reddy speaking to the BW Businessworld confirmed that the light tank for the Indian Army is under development that is based on the design provided by the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) and it will be ready soon.
Indian Private sector company, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) along with CVRDE are working together to develop the prototype for which it has already started procuring armor steel and other systems and tools for the program. The light tank in development will be fitted with a High Altitude Operable Powerpack (Engine + Transmission) of 1000hp and will be capable of firing multiple ammunition.
Light tank weighing 30-35-tons will be based on the Next Generation Main Battle Tank (NGMBT) Chassis and will be equipped with a 105mm gun and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun along with armor protection systems to provide ballistic protection up to NATO STANG 4569 Level 4.
