The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed fuel cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) for Indian Naval Submarines recently crossed several milestones in technology maturity and as per report prepared by Business Standard, INS Kalvari the first of the Scorpene submarine already inducted in the Indian Navy will be getting AIP systems in 2024-25 when it is due for mid-life refit.
All Six submarines will get DRDO developed AIP system from 2024 onwards which will have a force multiplier effect on the lethality of a diesel-electric submarine as it enhances the submerged endurance of the boat, several folds.
Land-based prototype engineered to the form-and-fit of a submarine has been successfully demonstrated as per requirements of the Indian Navy. DRDO Chairman Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy on a visit to the land-based prototype at the Naval Materials Research Laboratory in Ambernath, Maharashtra assured that all efforts will be made to meet the performance standards and timelines of the program so that induction of DRDO AIP into operational Submarines could be achieved as per Indian Navy schedule.
