Indigenous HTT 40 basic trainer aircraft program is progressing at a fast pace and has achieved a major milestone today when it undertook the 6-turn spin successfully. HTT 40 program achieved 5-turn spin on Sept 4 thus completing the most crucial and challenging aspect of flight testing of any aircraft development program.

The HTT-40 program will be accorded production clearance by end of this year by HAL and program also achieved its Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) which will allow Limited Scale Production of aircraft in 2020. Indian Air Force (IAF) is looking to induct 106 basic trainers and HAL designed and developed the Hindustan Turboprop Trainer (HTT-40) is in an advantageous position after Defence Ministry banned Pilatus for a year on charges of corruption in the Rs 2,800-crore deal bagged by the Swiss company in 2012 to supply 75 Pilatus trainers to the IAF.

HAL officials have confirmed to that HTT-40 Trainer will be offered to Indian Air Force for User trials by early next year and Final Operational Clearance (IOC) for the aircraft will be achieved in 2021. HTT-40 project entered detail design stage in August 2013 and the first prototype of HTT-40 achieved its first flight on May 2016 and in May 2017 second prototype completed its maiden flight.

HTT-40 program can be counted as one of the quickest indigenous defence programs to have evolved from the drawing to IOC Certification in recent times.
