Chairman DRDO Dr. G Satheesh Reddy speaking to ” Financial Express Online” said that Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) co-developed Light Tank for the Indian Army will be rolled out in 2023 and the work is in full swing on manufacturing of the prototype.
Light tanks are ideal to be used for mountain warfare and will be deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) where the Chinese PLA has deployed Type 15 / ZTQ-15 light tank in the region. Reddy also confirmed that Larsen & Toubro (L&T) will be in charge of the manufacturing of Light Tank when it clears all developmental and User (Army) Trials.
Last year in April the Indian Army issued a Request For Information (RFI) for procuring around 350 light tanks with a weight of fewer than 25 tones to be deployed in High Altitude Areas (HAA). Light Tank is built on agreed specifications with the Indian Army and is fully funded under Make-I or the “government-funded” project category.
