Before the commencement of the avaition trials in November, Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) will finish installing the Range Surface to Air Missile (LR-SAM) system and the MF-STAR (multi-functional digital active electronically scanned array) radar.

As per Madhu S. Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL, installation of both systems will be completed in 45 to 60 days since the bulk of the support system’s integration has already been completed.

Israel’s Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) jointly developed the LR-SAM, which is the primary air defence system that will provide outer cover and  inner coverage provided by VL-SRSAM against  Any aerial threats  to the INS Vikrant.

MF-STAR is an active electronically scanned array multifunction naval radar system made by IAI that can track simultaneously air and surface targets and can track hundreds of objects at once with a very rapid refresh rate. It possesses the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously and can deliver guided illumination, mid-course updates, and anti-ship missiles that are both active and semi-active. Furthermore, it has automatic splash detection and correction capabilities for assistance of naval gunnery.
